HOPS Short Course: Traveling Water Waves
نویسنده
چکیده
In this contribution we discuss Higher Order Perturbation of Surfaces (HOPS) methods with particular application to traveling water waves. The Transformed Field Expansion method (TFE) is discussed as a method for handling the unknown fluid domain. The procedures for computing Stokes waves and Wilton Ripples are compared. The Lyapunov-Schmidt procedure for the Wilton Ripple is presented explicitly in a simple, weakly nonlinear model equation.

HOPS Short Course: Stability of Traveling Water Waves
In this contribution we present Higher Order Perturbation of Surfaces (HOPS) methods as applied to the spectral stability problem for traveling water waves. The Transformed Field Expansion method (TFE) is used for both the traveling wave and its spectral data. The Lyapunov-Schmidt reductions for simple and repeated eigenvalues are compared. The asymptotics of modulational instabilities are disc...
متن کاملOn stability of generalized short-crested water waves
In this paper, we take up the question of dynamic stability of genuinely two-dimensional ‘‘generalized’’ hexagonal traveling wave patterns on the surface of a three-dimensional ideal fluid (i.e., stability of Generalized Short-Crested Wave (GSCW) solutions of the water wave problem). We restrict ourselves to a study of spectral stability which considers the linearization of the water wave opera...
متن کاملTraveling Waves for the Whitham Equation
The existence of traveling waves for the original Whitham equation is investigated. This equation combines a generic nonlinear quadratic term with the exact linear dispersion relation of surface water waves of finite depth. It is found that there exist small-amplitude periodic traveling waves with sub-critical speeds. As the period of these traveling waves tends to infinity, their velocities ap...
متن کاملTraveling Waves of Some Symmetric Planar Flows of Non-Newtonian Fluids
We present some variants of Burgers-type equations for incompressible and isothermal planar flow of viscous non-Newtonian fluids based on the Cross, the Carreau and the power-law rheology models, and on a symmetry assumption on the flow. We numerically solve the associated traveling wave equations by using industrial data and in order to validate the models we prove existence and uniqueness of ...
متن کاملSolitons and other solutions of the long-short wave equation
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the integrability studies to the long-short wave equation that is studied in the context of shallow water waves. There are several integration tools that are applied to obtain the soliton and other solutions to the equation. The integration techniques are traveling waves, exp-function method, G0/G-expansion method and several others. Design/meth...
